New SEO Strategies Needed: Optimize Content for Generative AI

SEO can be incredibly frustrating. You’re putting in the work, creating valuable content, and optimizing for AI and users—essentially SEO for AI and people. Meanwhile, you’re looking at traffic and wondering, “Why aren’t there any results yet?” In a world of instant gratification, SEO can feel slow. And it’s not just about being found anymore; it’s also about being selected.

Article Overview

    • Success now requires more than traditional rankings; you must combine SEO, AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).
    • The goal is to win discovery, selection, and citation across search, assistants, and chat.
    • Focus on clean, structured, authoritative content with concise, extractable answers so AI can find, understand, and attribute your brand.
    • Results accrue with consistency as trust and authority build across web, social, and video before AI models recommend you.
    • Training and ongoing support can help you execute these strategies effectively.

It’s Not Just SEO Anymore

Traditional SEO focused on ranking on the first page of search results. That’s still important, but it’s no longer enough. To maintain online visibility, you also need AEO and GEO, which prioritize search intent and adapt to how users interact with information across search, assistants, and chat. Think of the landscape as AEO vs. SEO vs. GEO, each helping with discovery, selection, and the presentation of answers.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO remains vital because generative search engines (e.g., Gemini, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Copilot) rely on useful, high-quality, well-structured content. This includes proper titles, internal linking, backlinks, brand mentions, speed, and more. This is also SEO for AI, since modern AI experiences depend on clean, structured signals.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

AEO focuses on concise content that’s easily extractable and understood by AI. When someone asks Siri, Alexa, or a chatbot a question, AEO helps synthesize voice or written answers and solutions, and often alongside cited brands. Voice search optimization is especially important here.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

GEO ensures your content is easy for AI-powered tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini) to find, understand, and cite trusted, verifiable, authoritative sources in generated answers. In practice, you optimize so your pages are discoverable, attributable, and quotable.

These Strategies Work with Consistency and Time

At Online Presence Care, we use these strategies and more. They take time and consistency because you’re not just chasing keyphrases anymore; you’re building a brand people can trust and creating authority in your field. Brand and authority aren’t built overnight; search engines and AI models look for consistent brand signaling across social media, video, and websites. AI models learn you’re a source of truth before they recommend you.

Common Questions about SEO & AI

Why has the pace of SEO performance changed in the era of AI?

Visibility is no longer just about ranking for keywords. It is about winning discovery, selection, and citation across search, assistants, and chat. That means combining SEO with AEO and GEO, and consistently proving trust and authority across your website, social, and video channels. AI models take time to learn you’re a reliable source before they recommend and cite you, so results accrue with consistent execution rather than overnight spikes.

What’s the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

  • SEO focuses on clean, structured, quality content (titles, internal linking, backlinks, brand mentions, speed) so both people and generative search engines (e.g., Gemini, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Copilot) can find and value your pages.
  • AEO prioritizes concise, easily extractable answers that assistants and chatbots can understand and use, especially for voice search, often alongside cited brands.
  • GEO ensures your content is discoverable, attributable, and quotable in AI-generated answers by being trusted, verifiable, and authoritative.
  • Together, they help you get discovered, selected for answers, and cited across search, assistants, and chat.

How should I structure content so AI can find, understand, and cite my brand?

Keep content clean, structured, and authoritative. Use proper titles, clear internal linking, quality backlinks, meaningful brand mentions, and fast pages. Provide concise, extractable answers that AI can lift directly, and ensure your information is trusted, verifiable, and quotable. This combination makes it easier for generative tools to discover you, understand your expertise, and attribute your brand in their responses.

How long until AI assistants and search recommend my site?

There’s no instant timeline. Recommendation and citation follow a consistent approach: building brand trust and authority across your website, social presence, and video over time. As you show up reliably with high-quality, structured, helpful content, AI models learn that you’re a source of truth and become more likely to surface and cite you.

AI Overview Impacts Search Results and Website Traffic

Has AI taken over your life yet? Whenever I open my email or any writing applications, there is now AI suggesting to help write, summarize, etc. Sometimes, this interruption gets on my nerves. I am determined to maintain my mental sharpness and stay engaged, refusing to fall into complacency or lethargy.

I want to share some insights regarding results from search engines with AI gaining more control and how it affects website owners and internet users. Below, I listed some issues to look out for and what I do to stay cautious. In addition, I will discuss how we implement adjustments to our SEO strategies at Online Presence Care to positively impact search engine rankings.

AI Overview ‘AIO’ Takes Over

For some search results, AI now summarizes answers at the very top, called AI Overview or AIO. A search engine gathers information from multiple online sources, and some websites can be less reputable. This means that the user has to take the answers with a ‘grain of salt.’

Whenever I conduct an online search, I make it a point to sift through the results until I locate a website that I trust for its credibility and reliability. I typically look for established sources, such as reputable news organizations, academic institutions, and science and government sites.

Search Result Rankings Impacted by AIO

In many search results, AIO pushes relevant websites down because the context-rich answers, including a list of websites, take up a lot of space at the top. This impacts rankings for many website owners. I tend to glance at the list of sources in AIO, and if I don’t recognize the source, I scroll down to a website that I know.

This shift in search visibility means that even well-optimized websites may struggle to attract clicks if they aren’t included in AIO’s sourced list. As a result, brand recognition and trust play a bigger role than ever. For website owners, this emphasizes the importance of not only ranking well but also building authority through consistent, high-quality content, strong branding, and collaboration with other content creators to increase the chances of being referenced in AIO.

AI Search Engines Impact Website Traffic

There is also an issue where some website owners have seen a decline in traffic due to people using AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Copilot, or Perplexity AI (to name a few). I have noticed, though, that ChatGPT now includes UTM tags in link sources that it includes in some answers. This means that some of that traffic can be tracked now.

While the integration of UTM tags marks a step forward in tracking, it also presents an opportunity for website owners to adapt. Analyzing the tagged traffic allows to gain insights into user behavior and evaluate the effectiveness of various content pieces. This data enables more informed decision-making regarding content creation, marketing efforts, and overall website optimization.

Keep Up with AI and Expanding SEO Efforts

Knowing these challenges, our team constantly adjusts SEO optimizations. To keep up with high search result rankings, there are several factors. Website speed, adjustability to different mobile devices, and security are still relevant. Creating helpful, easy-to-understand content written by professionals in the field also holds great importance. Furthermore, the text needs a structure that makes reading easy and allows readers to find answers to questions and information quickly. Another factor is that keywords now need to also include more user-intent phrases

We are constantly expanding our efforts to keep up with AI. I’ll make sure to share updates on my blog as we progress. If you have any questions, send me a message through my contact form or schedule an online meeting with me.

I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences regarding AI usage here in the comments section below.
